Goals should name the social-communication, sensory, or executive-function barrier that affects the subject, while still building on predictable routines, visual learning, and strengths.
Look for the thinking behind the math, not just the final answer. Many students can calculate but struggle to choose an operation, explain reasoning, handle language in word problems, or keep multi-step work organized.
Disability + skill connection
Autism does not create one math profile. Evaluation data and work samples may show that word-problem language, an unfamiliar format, sensory load, flexible strategy use, executive demands, or the required response mode affects performance—or that a different math skill is the actual barrier. Baseline each component instead of attributing every math error to autism.
Build from strengths: Build from the student's observed strengths—such as visual models, patterns, interests, concrete materials, or predictable routines—only when current data shows that the approach improves math access or reasoning. Middle school introduces a fundamentally different structure: multiple teachers, rotating classes, heavier homework loads, and increased social pressure. Executive functioning demands rise sharply. IEP goals may need to teach organizational, self-advocacy, and self-regulation skills explicitly, and service decisions should account for the new demands.

High school IEP goals should serve a dual purpose: supporting academic success AND building skills for life after graduation. Federal rules generally call for transition planning beginning by age 16 (or earlier in some states), but teams sometimes under-document it. Goals should explicitly connect to post-secondary outcomes — whether that's college, vocational training, employment, or independent living.
